Learning objectives (text)

Technology: the student
- knows the layered building up of a painting; he/she understands the function of each layer and the interaction between the layers.
- acquires a basic knowledge in historical  painting techniques.

 - knows the origin, composition and properties of some commonly used painting materials.

- can independantly carry out basic techniques such as stretching a canvas, preparing various types of supports etc.

 

Copy: Student

 

- broadens his/her knowledge of painting (eg brushwork, paint aspect, materials), outside the studio environment through a study of different approaches by artists.

 

- learns about the historical build up of a painting through a thorough examination of the end product

 

- can identify and appreciate the approaches of historical painting techniques

- can produce a reasonably faithful copy of a painting whilst also taking into account the original painting techniques used.

The student has a basic knowledge in historical painting techniques.
The student knows the origin, composition and properties of a number of widely used materials from painting.
The student can apply a number of ways of stretching cloth, preparation of carriers, etc. himself.
The student has expanded his / her knowledge of and experience with brushwork, construction, paint film, and use of materials by studying and copying a work of art outside the sphere of his or her own painting practice.
The student is able to understand the structure of a historical painting through thorough analysis of the final result.
The student can notice and appreciate the qualities of historical painting.
The student can make a faithful copy of a historical painting according to the original structure and technique at beginners level.

Learning objectives

The  role of the theoretical apsect of the course is to provide the student with insight into:
- the layered building up of a painting; the function of each layer and the interaction between the layers
- some historical painting techniques
- the origin, composition and properties of some commonly used painting materials
- some basic techniques such as stretching a canvas, preparing various types of supports, ...

The role of the practical aspect (copy):
- the student broadens his/her knowledge of painting (eg brushwork, paint aspect, materials) through the study and the production of a copy of a painting from a museum collection.
- the student learns about the historical build up of a painting through a thorough examination of the end product
- the student can identify and appreciate the approaches of historical painting techniques
- the student gains manual dexterity during the process of producing a faithful copy

Composition of  the paint
Construction of the painting; historical examples
Origin, composition and properties of the different materials used in  painting
Practical information, techniques and recipes for own studio practice
Copy: The student chooses an artwork to copy, creates a plan in consultation with the teacher regarding construction and use of materials and carries it out to the best of his/her ability.
