Learning objectives (text)

The student knows the basic research principles. He is able to collect information on a subject in the arts by using several kinds of information sources e.g.  reference works, bibliographies, monographies, (scientific) periodicals, dissertations, electronic databases, audiovisual sources. He is able to use the different methods and research techniques to detect and handle primary and secondary data available in library catalogues and classicifications systems. The student has developed a research attitude. He is able to design a search strategy to collect information on a certain subject, to analyse, to evaluate and to select whether the information is useful to write a paper. The student is able to submit a relevant and intelligible paper on the agreed subject by a certain deadline.

Learning objectives

The research methodology 1 course is the first in a series of three courses spread over three bachelor years where diverse research competences and attitudes are developed.

- during the first bachelor year the emphasis is on reading comprehension and learning search techniques (research methodology 1)

- the second bachelor year will be focussing on handling reference systems (research methodology 2)

- the third bachelor focusses on the presentation of information (reserach methodology 3)

The student can be considered a potential researcher when he has successfully completed these three stages.

Course content

In the introduction class the importance and the goals of research are explained as well as the methods to perform research in a scientific manner. A compulsory reading test will be taken to evaluate the level of reading comprehension and formulating a text. This test will be graded on a scale of 5 and is worth 25% of the final course grade. The class on academic writing theoretically teaches how to do research work, understand information and rework it into an intelligible text, including a first acquaintance with the existence of reference systems and the styleguide of AP University College.

Next, each student is assigned a particular subject by the professor. As a first step each student has to perform a search on the internet. After that, group sessions of about 20 students are organised at the library under the guidance of the professor where each student has to compare his internet search results with information in reference works. In collaboration with the librarian the student will learn how to find relevant publications in Antwerp libraries and beyond by using databases. The group session at the library will be graded on a scale of 5 exam points. Finally each student has to process the information on his subject into a paper according to the instructions of the professor and by a specific deadline. The paper will be graded on a scale of 10 points and is worth 50% of the final course grade.
