"Perspectives on Europe" focuses on the international dimension of social work.

What is social work from an international perspective? You investigate the developments that social work goes through in a predominantly European context, but you also look, more broadly, at the global level .

You direct your own learning trajectory: you determine the themes and work out assignments, ... specific interests certainly find a place in this course.
International guest speakers constantly introduce topics and current affairs and thematic classes put you on the road to get a grip on the international (European) social work agenda.

The course is offered in English, but at a level and with work forms that enable you to connect easily if you have a basis. Assignments and exams can, if desired, be in Dutch.

The course is part of the international semester "Education and Social Work in a Metropolitan Context". The student group is a mixed group of Erasmus students from all over Europe studying for a semester at AP-UC and regular social work students who take the course as a 3rd year elective. In this sense, the course guarantees a unique international meeting.

The course is thematically structured. Based on a portfolio (workbook) the student processes contents and insights. The portfolio is also the final exam product.

* Theme 1: International social work in a European perspective: the basics.

The student has insight into the character of social work, with an emphasis on the EU. (2 lessons)


* Theme 2: social work work (education): an international comparative perspective

Student understands the (European) variation and differences in social work training. (2 lessons)
The training of social workers is very different from country to country and is closely linked to the tradition and topicality of social work in the country in question. Based on a selection and short introductions by Erasmus students and the international guest lecturers, we compare and get an appreciation for the similarities and differences.

* Theme 3: Social work in international themes:

International guest teachers introduce us in an international perspective. From their own background and expertise they share their insights and ideas from a European perspective. We use didactic material such as film, supported by some literature and material for discussion. (4 to 5 lessons)


* Theme 4: Social work agenda from a European perspective: social justice and human rights: student is working on a brief case study.

Here we look at current themes, some of which are introduced by guest lecturers and through regular classes. Each student (can work in pairs) works out a theme and presents this in the form of a discussion class.  Guidance and time are provided for this assignment. (3 lessons)

Modalities: Language
The lessons are offered in English. A basic level of English is sufficient (secondary education and / or affinity). During the course you will have the opportunity to talk about the topics in English. The guest lectures are offered in English.
Students have the choice of making the portfolio and the case study in English or Dutch.

The student group group is a mix of regular students and incoming Erasmus students, which creates a very international atmosphere.
