Learning outcomes (text)

The student gains insight in the history of the photographic medium. The focus is on the 19th century, pictorialism and modernism between the world wars. The student learns to analyse the style of the key-figures discussed and medium-specific and technological developments, as well as contextualize them in a wider cultural-historical and social perspective.

Course content

In this course you will learn about photo history (with a focus on 19th century photography and modernism) and contemporary photography. You will not only be looking at photographs, but you’ll also be introduced to different theoretical approaches to photography by reading texts and writing exercises, as well as presenting your research on certain topics in group or individual. Apart from lectures, expect group discussions and practice-based tutorials.
Main aim is conceptualization and contextualization of photographs & looking, reading and thinking together
Your performance at the tutorials will constitute an integral part of the evaluation of the course (20 %).
