Learning outcomes (text)

The student will research aspects of modernism in photohistory, as well as give a presentation and write a paper on a photographer from the period 1900-1945. The main assignment is to analyse life and work of one key-figure from the modernist period. Coaching and feedback-sessions are provided. By using timelines the student will situate the photographic work in a cultural-historical context.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
The student can situate the work of a photographer in its cultural-historical context.
BA5 - When developing his/her personal visual language the students starts from a searching and reflective attitude when developing one's own visual language.
The student can analyze the life and work of a photographer.
The student can independently carry out research into aspects of photo history.
BA6 - The student understands the characteristics of his/her personal designs and/or realizations and is able to communicate about this in an appropriate manner.
The student can communicate clearly (visually, verbally and in writing) about his independent research.

Learning objectives

Gaining deeper understanding of the work of key photographers from the modernist period (by monographic research). Personal interest of the students links this research to their own practice.

Course content

ASSIGNMENT: 'Portrait of a photographer '
Research the work of one photographer whose main achievement was in the period between the two world wars: 1918-1940.
Write a short biographical note (1 page).
Present a portfolio of his/her most amazing photographic works, grouped in projects, series, photobooks or exhibitions.
Critical analyse of the work: what is the concept of the work (ideas, theme, issues at stake), its style and in what historical context does it appear (other photographers, visual arts, society at large)?
Create a timeline to situate the evolution of this photographer. (USE handbook Juliet Hacking, 2012)
Assemble some good texts (at least 5) about this photographer (the movement, the debate...)  -  a good interview, a review, critique... - and choose 10 quotes that are essential for the interpretation of the work.
Not only you search for a general interpretation of the work,
5 images you'll discuss in-depth.
Last but not least give your personal appreciation. (half page)
