Learning outcomes (text)

The student has acquired insight in the basic characteristics and the evolution of western art history of the modern era from the 16th towards the end of the 18th century. The student knows and recognizes the most important trends, artists and art works from High Renaissance up to and including neoclassicism. The student understands the material, formal and content characteristics of art styles of this period. The student is able use them as a reference. The student is able to process information on art topics in a personal way. The student has learned how to take notes adequately to the information provided by the PowerPoint Presentations shown and explained during the classes.The student is capable to read a handbook and to use it as study material.

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
The student understands the material, formal and content characteristics of art styles of this period.

Learning objectives

The course is part of a series of five that deals with the Western art history from Prehistory until today:
- in the first bachelor the student meets the art of Western Europe from Prehistory up to and including neoclassicism, split into two courses respectively taught during the first and the second term (art history 1 and 2).
- in the second bachelor the student gets an overview on (European) art of the 19th and first half of the 20th century, also spread over two terms (art history 3 + 4).
- the third bachelor course deals with contemporary art.
By the end of the entire programme the student will have acquired a historical reference framework of the visual arts in Western Europe and by extension the cultural historical background involved.

Course content

The course provides a chronological overview of the canonic developments in western art during the modern era. More specifically high Renaissance, mannerism, baroque, rococo and neoclassicism are addressed. For each style a cultural historical introduction will provide the necessary context, including relationships with current situations. For each style examples on architecture, sculpture and painting will be explained in their different aspects: materials, techniques, design, creation process and iconography. Occasionally the art of drawing, graphic arts, chinaware and artists' writings will be discussed. Some topics will be treated profoundly in capita selecta. Actual information concerning the content of the course is provided: exhibitions, events, publications.

Each week a PowerPoint Presentation including text, images and bibliography with specialised literature is made accessible as study documentation on the electronic learning platform. Required reading are the indicated chapters in the handbook available at the academy library: Prof. Ernst Hans GOMBRICH, "The story of art", London, Phaidon Press, 2010 (16th edition).

Evaluation (text)

Written exam with multiple choice questions and one open question, for the first as well as the second exam period.
