Course content

Graphic design is a relatively young discipline but has deep roots in a distant past. Overall, the course studies the constitutive historical moments and diversification processes of this discipline. The first part deals with initial traces and achievements of various ancient image and writing cultures, the Western medieval manuscript styles and the rise and spread of printing. Conceptual frames of reference (Peirce and Panofski) are also offered, sharpening analytical skills in the areas of perception, interpretation and reception. These analytical models are applied to the visual material of the given period. The content of the course is updated annually in function of current developments. Depending on this, the emphasis may change from year to year.
