Course content

In the introduction class the importance and the goals of research are explained as well as the methods to perform research in a scientific manner. A compulsory reading test will be taken to evaluate the level of reading comprehension and formulating a text. This test will be graded 5 exam points. The class is completed by information on academic writing and theoretically teaches how to do research work, understand information and rework it into an intelligible text, including a first acquaintance with the existence of reference systems and the styleguide of AP University College.

Next, each student is assigned a particular subject by the professor. As a first step each student has to perform a search on the internet and in the library whereas under the lead of the professor each student has to compare his internet search results with information in reference works. In collaboration with the librarian the student will learn how to find relevant publications in Antwerp libraries and beyond by using databases. The research will be graded on a scale of 5 exam points. Finally each student has to process the information on his subject into a paper according to the instructions of the professor and by a specific deadline. The paper will be graded on a scale of 10 exam points.
