Prerequisite competencies (text)

Wide intellectual curiosity and artistic sensitivity. The student entering the 1st BA has an interest in a broad cultural field.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA1 - The student has the necessary artistic skills to design and/or realize a personal project within the broad spectrum of the visual arts under supervision.
The student has the social skills needed to develop social documentary photographic projects (trust, respect, ethical issues).
BA2 - The student has the necessary knowledge, skills and insights regarding material, form, action, concepts, function and contents of the chosen medi
The student masters the basic principles of digital presentation (Pdf, Powerpoint or Keynote, preparation files for digital projection).
The student masters the basic principles of photography (light, composition and image building, sharpness, form)
The student understands and can apply the basic principles of printing technology (dark room, analog and digital inkjet print), can make proofs and determine size, and knows about the presentation possibilities of exhibition prints.
The student is able to control and manage the camera settings, metadata, histogram and acquaints with technical camera and adjustment options, develop sheet films, make contact prints, digital scanning, digital post production and image editing, printing.
The student is able to handle various digital applications and to critically evaluate where and how he / she can use these techniques.
The student knows the basic skills concerning the measurement of light, different light types and sources.
The student can use different recording materials (digital, large format and analog camera), perform correct light measurements, and make digital prints and analogue black and white enlargements.
BA4 - The student develops and sharpens his/her critical and investigative attitude towards designs and/or realizations that arise from visual experiments and research, emotion and intuition.
The student has a positive work attitude, can critically consider his own work and the work of fellow students, and can process criticism in a constructive way.
BA5 - When developing his/her personal visual language the students starts from a searching and reflective attitude when developing one's own visual language.
The student has basic insights concerning conceptual and technical aspects, and the meaning of his/her (autonomous) work.
The student bears witness to a knowledge of the various visual elements and has, to some extent, developed his own visual language.
The student can use references, select from his own work, and present a series in meaningful sequences.
The student can create meaningful (series of) images, using form and content, testifying of an individual visual language.
BA7 - The student is able to organize his/her artistic project in consultation with others.
The student can carry out assignments at different speeds (short and long term) and is able to meet a deadline.

Course content

1st year: Introduction
Discovering

- Art , history, artistry , research ...
- Practical knowledge: analoge technology , digital technology , camera formats , light, composition , assembly and acchrochage .
- Photography as an act of  'making' (staging) , 'finding' ( documentary ) and 'taking' ( appropriation, sampling, quote ) .
( These basic processes  may , of course, also be mixed)
The creative process is mastered and still questioned within the following structure:
1. Rationale ( preoccupation )
2. Subject (subject)
3. Methodology ( method)
In the first BA, the student is introduced to the wide range of visual options and strategies (through making and analysing images). Basic photographic techniques are acquired. Experiment leads to discovery. In addition to a number of tasks that run at different speeds, the student develops an understanding of the importance of independent - personal - work.

Study material (text): Mandatory

Digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) (optionally also an analogue camera), tripod and lightmeter (can be borrowed for short periods from the department), large format camera (purchase not obligatory, these camera are present int he studio, darkroom equipment (provided by the department), videocamera (available, possible to borrow from IT-department), PC/MAC computer, scanners (present in the digital studio), A0 and A2 printers (present in the digital print workshop)

Evaluation (text)

Different display moments (at the end of the first semester the students are required to set up a try-out exhibition. At the final jury of the 1st BA, students have to present their work in a precise and well-executed exhibition.

The marks are given according to the following evaluation-guidelines:

1) Artistic quality (creativity + authenticity, urgency and relevance)
2) Broad development (all assignments must be carried out, the highest possible level is pursued in every task, so students train to become all-round photographers.)
3) craftsmanship / material knowledge (printing techniques, post-production, light control, using the right photographic tools to convey the intent of the author in book projects the sequence, material and size is important. When working with text, it is important that this is used in a good way and is of a sufficiently high level, ...)
4) Communication skills (students can articulate clearly what he / she is doing - in front of a group)
5) Frame of reference (the student can situate his / her work in a historical and contemporary context and is able to conduct historical research)
6) Participation (in group critique sessions, participation in workshops, lectures, exhibition visit)
