Prerequisite competencies (text)

The student understands the forms of a living model. He/she is able to convert these to clay in a structured and personal way. The student can handle clay in various ways to achieve a personal clay test. He/she understands the concept of abstraction and uses it during the work process.

He / she can perform a moulage of a full-size figure in plaster. He / she is able to make a solid construction in iron and wood for the construction of a life-size figure. He/she has sufficient knowledge to correctly prepare and conserve clay. The student is able to make his/her own planning for carrying out assignments. He / she can explain his / her work and work process to the teachers and fellow students. The student is able to look critically at his work.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA2 - The student has the necessary knowledge, skills and insights regarding material, form, action, concepts, function and contents of the chosen medi
The student masters the more advanced aspects of the modeling and moulage techniques.
The student can apply simple technical aspects of modeling.
You can translate the human anatomy into a 3D carrier in a modeling way.
BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
The student has a thorough knowledge of historical and contemporary examples of sculpture.
The student is able to recognise the societal impact of the production process and justify it.

The student can use a coherent personal visual language when constructing a human figure from clay.
The student can construct in clay a small figure study, based on perception, in a constructively and anatomically correct way.
The student can create with clay - from observation - a portrait based on a plaster example in a constructively and anatomically correct way.
The student can come to a personal interpretation with clay.

Course content

- In BA1 and BA2, the student has acquired knowledge around the construction and anatomical building of a life-size figure in clay. He/she can now use this basis to come to freer and more personal studies. Using design sketches in clay and on paper, he/she will arrive at personal designs. The acquired insights in traditional and contemporary sculpture make it possible to make personal choices in form, content and texture.

- By building and realizing 2 personal life-size figure studies and some preliminary studies, the student learns to progress. After the simple moulage exercises in BA2 and BA3 on standard forms, the student has now had the opportunity to moulage more complex forms in various materials. Through the more complex poses of the life-size figures and the ability to resolve them more freely and personally, the student is encouraged to explore options and solutions towards construction and interpretation.

- The student will progressively create several small figure studies in clay. Through a constructive construction and anatomical research, the student arrives at the result.

- Step by step, the student makes several small figure studies in clay. By means of a constructive structure and anatomical research, the student will arrive at a result.

- Through design sketches on paper and in clay, the student learns to come to his/her own interpretation of the model. The focus in the final realization of a full-size clay sculpture is on the personal interpretation. The student learns to make personal choices of form, dynamics, plasticity, balance, rhythm and skin. The student has the opportunity to relate the model study to work from autonomous practice.

- Through the lessons in art history and specific art history, the student learns about the art landscape. During the various practical classes, visual material and text on both contemporary and historical sculptors is continuously presented and discussed. In addition, the student is encouraged to search for image and theoretical material on historical and contemporary sculptors on their own.
