Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Prerequisite competencies (text)

The student understands the basic forms of a living model. He/she is able to convert these to clay in a structured manner. The student is familiar with handling clay in various ways in order to achieve a possible personal clay test. He/she is able to perform a simple moulage of a hand or foot with plaster. He/she is able to make a basic construction in iron and wood for the construction of a torso and/or portrait. He/she has sufficient knowledge to prepare and conserve clay. The student can make his own planning for the execution of assignments. He/she can explain his/her work and work process to the teachers and fellow students. The student is able to look critically at his work.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA1 - The student has the necessary artistic skills to design and/or realize a personal project within the broad spectrum of the visual arts under supervision.
The student is able to start the development of a personal visual language on the basis of observation exercises.
BA2 - The student has the necessary knowledge, skills and insights regarding material, form, action, concepts, function and contents of the chosen medi
The student can represent the structure and the mechanical effect of the anatomy of the entire human figure.
The student can perform simple moulage techniques.
The student can apply simple technical aspects of modeling.
You can translate the human anatomy into a 3D carrier in a modeling way.
You can construct a human figure on the basis of anatomical mechanical functioning.
BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
The student has a thorough knowledge of historical and contemporary examples of sculpture.
BA5 - When developing his/her personal visual language the students starts from a searching and reflective attitude when developing one's own visual language.
The student can construct in clay a small figure study, based on perception, in a constructively and anatomically correct way.
The student can construct in clay a life-size figure study, based on perception, in a constructively and anatomically correct way.
The student can perform a moulage (of portrait, torso and life-size figure).
The student can create with clay - from observation - a portrait based on a plaster example in a constructively and anatomically correct way.

Course content

- Through sketches and discussions the student learns to recognize the skeleton in the living model. On the basis of the proportions of the skeleton, the student learns to make a custom-made construction (fixture) in steel that serves as a support for the final clay sculpture. The use of plumb and compass can help the student to achieve his goal. Once the fixture is ready, the student can gradually apply the clay in relation to the anatomy. If necessary, the student repeats the different steps to achieve a quality result.

- After having learned the basic knowledge about the moulage in plaster in BA1, the student is now taught the moulage of a life-size figure. The student learns how to make a lost mould in different steps.

- The student realizes a portrait in terracotta.

- By creating a folder with a selection of the student's chosen examples of figurative works by different artists, he/she can show what appeals to him or her. Through small clay sketches and drawings the student can explore and develop his/her own visual language. The student is given the space to experiment with clay according to test, skin surface and shape (tension). In addition to using their own hands, the student also learns to use other 'tools' such as hammer, planks, scrapers, putty knives and loomers to work and personalise the clay.

- The student gradually makes several small figure studies in clay. By means of a constructive construction and anatomical research the student comes to a result.

- Through drawing exercises, anatomy lessons and observations of the models and the human skeleton, the student gets to know the human anatomy. By means of constructive modelling exercises in which they work from the inside out, they learn to translate their knowledge into 3D.

- Through the lessons in art history and specific art history the student gets to know the art landscape. During the various practical lessons, visual material and text about both contemporary and historical sculptors are continuously presented and discussed. In addition, the student is stimulated to look for visual and theoretical material about historical and contemporary sculptors.
