Course content

The course ‘Analysis techniques’ is an introduction to the various techniques for analysing the performing arts (including theatre, dance, music theatre, Performance Art and circus).

Attention is paid in the first place to the way in which the theatrical signs were used in the creation of the performance. The various theatrical elements (space, décor, music, light, facial expressions, gestures, text, etc.) are examined as sign systems. How is meaning constructed by theatrical signs in a performance? How can the student analyse these and (above all) use them herself to create meaning?

In addition to semiotics, various alternative forms of analysis are presented in this class, including phenomenology, intermediality, gender and Queer theory, postcolonial theory and ecology, etc.

By means of a viewing, writing and reading trajectory the students are engaged to analyze the (historical and contemporary) material in a critical and conscious way. The students have to try out different analysis techniques on different types of performances with the help of practical exercises.
