Course content

Teachers:

This course will be an integrated project in which you as a team of Belgian and international students will discover a lot of different characteristics of Antwerp, Flanders and Belgium:

1.) On Monday February 3rd 2020 you join the Teambuilding session of Mr. Lieven Vercauteren.

2.)  In consultation with the sponsors, the coaches and the teacher(s) each of the EPS teams will organize a field visit that is directly related to their specific project. Since all EPS students are expected to attend these different field visits, they have to be relevant and interesting for non-experts as well. Please check your schedule in Webuntis before you set a date. Once you have agreed upon a date for the field visit of your project team, inform Bie Dirkx about it so she can have it scheduled in Webuntis by providing her with the filled out info sheet of which you can find a template on Digitap.

3.) On top of these field visits all EPS-students will attend two English spoken lectures that are planned in the context of Studium Generale (https://www.ap.be/studium-generale)
   -   Tuesday March 10 2020, 7 p.m., deSingel - The many faces of the journalist: from the detached watchdog to the critical change agent (ENG)
   -   Tuesday March 31 2020, 7 p.m., deSingel - Language and dignity (ENG)

Subscribing for these lectures is obligatory but Bie Dirkx has already taken care of that for all EPS students, so please don't subscribe yourself.

All lectures of Studium Generale take place at Campus deSingel - Desguinlei 25, 2018 Antwerp – you can find a route description here: https://desingel.be/en/info/how-to-get-there

At the end of the course the student will improve following skills:

- organize research on various contents
- rephrase the gathered information and formulate arguments on various contents
- discuss and present various contents
- write papers on various contents
- give feedback to their own team members as well as to other EPS teams

Evaluation (text)

1.) In order to prove their attendance during the 7 EPS field visits and the Studium Generale lecture, each project team should take a group picture before, during or after each event, indicate who is on the picture, and send it by mail to Hiram Bollaert hiram.bollaert@ap.be not later than 1 week after the field visit / lecture took place.

2.) All EPS students produce a paper in which they reflect on 1 English spoken Studium Generale lecture. We expect the following of this paper:

  • +- 1500 words
  • The paper is not merely an abstract, but a reflection that reflects the views of the student on the topics that were discussed substantiated by relevant literature collected from libraries, Internet and other media. This reflection is a personal, original text in which quotes and sources are listed according to the required protocol. Cheating and plagiarism are penalized with a zero.
  • Deadline: Wednesday, May 12 2021 (please upload in the Dropzone Studium Generale paper on Digitap).

Criteria for evaluation:

  • Analysis and personal / critical reflection on a central question.
  • Relevant and correct use of resources.
  • Clear structure and layout.
  • Correct and active use of language and smooth formulation

Evaluation is mainly linked to the process (70%): attendance at all activities is therefore mandatory. 30% of the evaluation is based on the quality of  the Studium Generale paper. Students must pass both parts in order to pass for the cluster ‘Cross-cultural exploration'. If a student doesn’t pass one or both parts, the lowest grade will become the grade for the whole cluster.

If the student cannot attend one of the activities, the teacher will be informed in advance by email. In case this happens more than once during this semester, the student will have to provide the course coordinator with (a) medical certificate(s) in order to still be able to pass for the 70% of process evaluation.

If a student doesn’t pass for the cluster ‘Cross-cultural exploration’, a 2nd examination period can be offered in which the student will be asked to write a reflection paper of +- 4000 words (100%). Therefor the student will contact the course coordinator before Monday, June 28 by email and ask him to organize a 2nd evaluation period. The course coordinator will provide the student with a relevant topic for the paper. The student will send the paper of +- 4000 words to hiram.bollaert@ap.be. Deadline: August 31 2020.
