"The student knows the layered structure of a painting, he / she understands the function of each layer and the interaction between the layers. "
The student has a basic knowledge in historical painting techniques.
The student knows the origin, composition and properties of a number of widely used materials from painting.
The student can apply a number of ways of stretching cloth, preparation of carriers, etc. himself.
The student has expanded his / her knowledge of and experience with brushwork, construction, paint film, and use of materials by studying and copying a work of art outside the sphere of his or her own painting practice.
The student is able to understand the structure of a historical painting through thorough analysis of the final result.
The student can notice and appreciate the qualities of historical painting.
The student can make a faithful copy of a historical painting according to the original structure and technique at beginners level.

Course content

- The layers in which paintings are built up as exemplified by relevant historial and modern paintings.

- The origin, composition and properties of the various materials used in a painting.

- Practical information: techniques and recipes for use in own studio practice.

- Copy: The student chooses an artwork to copy. Consults with the teacher for a plan of action in which to build up the painting and to decide on the materials to use. Executes the copy to the best of the student's abiltity.



Study material (text): Mandatory

Dutch and English course notes are provided by the teacher via Digitap.

Powerpoint presentations are used during the lessons. In case of emergencies, these Powerpoint presentations are used for digital lessons.

The teacher brings painting materials with him to the lessons so that techniques can be explained by way of demonstration. These more practical lessons are only possible in the classroom.

The students take notes during the lessons.

Various books about painting techniques are available for the students in the classroom. Students can find a more detailed list of specific literature in the course bibliography.
