Learning outcomes (list)

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
"The student has a thorough knowledge of the western artistic developments of the first half of the 20th century. "
The student is able to explain and explain these developments and is aware of the artistic canon regarding the visual arts and the architecture of this period.

Course content

"Art History: First half of the twentieth century" offers a thorough art historical overview of the canonical artistic developments in Western Europe between 1900 and 1950.

A central theme is the relation between tradition, modernism and avant-garde. In about ten chapters the break-through and crisis of the avant-garde art is demonstrated by using concrete examples from architecture, applied arts, sculpture, painting and new media. We will discuss the following currents: Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Constructivism and New Pragmatism.

The most important artists and their realisations will be discussed in class. Each class starts with looking at and interpreting the present day art situation.
