Prerequisite competencies (text)

No specific prior knowledge is required to enter the course, we expect a broad cultural interest, and a particular curiosity for time-based arts.

Students wishing to enroll in the Moving Image course must pass an intake test.

A short project description (max 1 A4 page) must be sent to geertgoiris@gmail.com before 20/09/2020, 12.00 h.

The actual intake will be based on an interview which will be held on 25/09/2020.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA1 - The student has the necessary artistic skills to design and/or realize a personal project within the broad spectrum of the visual arts under supervision.
The student is able to deliver a video work of an acceptable professional level.
BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.

Course content

The Moving Image studio is a trajectory where the personal artistic development of the student takes a central place.
Your self-initiated project is carried out from the concept development to the final presentation through constant critical reflection and methodical research.
Every student enters the course with a project description, the complexity of your film will depend largely on your own ambitions and requirements.
You will be introduced to some basic skills of digital cinematography: camera movements, lens choice, editing and presentation of video images.
The studio Moving Image is in the true sense of the word a laboratory where a discourse is pursued between all those involved. The studio facilitates , as far as possible, the production of your time-based work.
You can opt for a pure form of video or digital cinema, or develop an interdisciplinary project, including performative and installation strategies.
The learning objective is to prepare the student technically, theoretically and insightfully to enter the artistic arena.

Study material (text): Mandatory

All students are required to purchase one external portable SSD (Solid State Driver)
Samsung T5 to record their data.

All students are recommended to install the (free) DaVinci Resolve video editing software on their computer so that they can practice at home.
Production facilities are available in the studio: high-performance computers with editing software, a projector for group screening, a small studio for sound recording, two camera’s, a complete set of lenses and two microphones.

Artistic praxis30,00 hours
  • Description: Studio meetings: 10 sessions of 3 hours. Semester 2.
  • Remark: Each student is expected to present an artistic concept for a short moving image, which will be closely monitored and supervised throughout the entire production process. No fixed assignments are given. On a regular basis, camera exercises or writing assignments are given to support certain aspects of a self-formulated autonomous project. This project- proposal is developed in consultation with the supervisor. The studio offers a framework where artistic strategies can be refined. Equal importance is given to the conceptual, technical and productional value of the work. Intermediate results are viewed and commented in group.
Collaborative learning

  • Description: - University lectures on the history of film (historical Avant-garde) by Prof. Dr. Steven Jacobs, literature department University of Antwerp; 2 sessions of three hours (illustrated lecture) English.- Lecture series Artist Moving Images 1960 – Today, by Vincent Stroep; 2 sessions of three hours.- Mediumspecific workshops, by Wim Catrysse; 10 sessions of 3 hours.- Workshop on film production and funding, organized by Escautville; 4 hours.- Cinemacademy: public program where a specific theme is highlighted and examined through lectures and film screenings; 2 full evening programs.
  • Remark: The two classes by Prof. Dr. Steven Jacobs are offered as studium generale: students of the studio Moving Image are not required to take the exam, but attendance at the lectures is monitored and compulsory. Depending on government rules on Covid -19, these lectures will be held on-campus or online.
    - It is strongly advised for the student of Moving Image to follow the course(s) Film History 1 and/or Film History 2 by Eric Ubben.

  • Description: Individual study - working time outside contact hours: Refining concept, filming, editing, post-production and presentation of video work.

Evaluation (text)

Permanent evaluation + end evaluation at het end of the year.

Assessment criteria are
- originality
- visual quality
- timing, rhythm and pace, tension curve
- conceptual coherence and clarity

The final result is formed by aggregating the marks obtained during the permanent evaluation (40%) and the end-of-year evaluation (60%).
