Course content

Based on image material and historical documentation, we will investigate how ‘contemporary’ art in Belgium developed a form, face and audience after the late 1950s. In addition to addressing crucial artists and their work, the course also addresses the channels that brought the innovative streams to the public (e.g. museums, art centres, galleries, artists’ initiatives, government agencies and art journals). The paradigm shifts from a predominantly pictorial discourse (e.g. constructivism, pop art, new vision, hyperrealism) towards a conceptualistic discourse (in the early 1970s) and from a modern to a postmodern discourse (in the 1980s) form a consistent theme throughout the research.
