Course content

Read the Vademecum
Using one or more specific cases, Lieder and opera texts or an opera performance will be analysed and linked with the music.

With the help of concrete examples of cross-pollination between music and literature, students will receive further introduction into the interpretation and meaning of literary texts which form the basis of a composition.

The course will attempt to assess correlations between music and literature. For this a special focus will be placed on Lieder and opera. Texts will be placed in their general cultural and historical framework and collectively analysed. For the poetry texts, advice on translation, analysis and interpretation will be provided. For opera libretti, shifts will be assessed with their literary source. The text will be analysed from a dramaturgical point of view and interpreted, bearing in mind the staging.

Study material (text): Mandatory
