Learning outcomes (text)

The course unit, Ensemble, is aimed at learning the techniques directly related to ensemble playing and to developing and expanding the student's knowledge of repertoire. It also puts the student in a position whereby he or she is capable of implementing the course content of the principal subject lessons in a practical way. In the Masters course, emphasis is placed on the refining and deepening of ensemble skills and the building up of a personal repertoire. The ensembles are encouraged to give public concerts.

* Role of one's own instrument relative to the other instruments and in terms of the ensemble
* Interaction between the various instruments
* Knowledge of repertoire
* Group sound

* Maintenance of tempo
* Playing from memory (auditory and melodic memory training)
* Style variation
* Sight-reading as a group
* Learning to lead a group
* Stage experience and steadiness on stage

Evaluation (text)

Assessment format: The exam consists of a concert given by the ensemble. Three numbers must be played in contrasting style, tempo and key. Students are examined in January and June. Each exam counts for one half of the total number of points. Exams count for 70% of the marks, and 30% of points are awarded on the basis of on-going evaluation throughout the year. Students in the ensemble are judged on an individual basis.

Assessment standards: The student will pass if the various elements of ensemble playing summarised under "Competencies" are sufficiently present and if the performance level meets the pre-requisite criteria for proceeding to the next study year. The student must achieve 50% of the total number of points in order to pass.
