Course content

The course 'Performance analysis 3' focuses on alternative forms of analysis besides semiotics, including phenomenology, intermediality, gender and Queer theory, postcolonial theory, poststructuralism and New Materialism.

The course starts with the pitfalls of semiotics and discusses then alternative theoretical perspectives. Each technique of analysis is covered through a brief introduction, history, and discussion of the main ideas and figures. This is followed by an application of these alternative analysis techniques to different case studies from the performing arts in the form of workshops.

This course requires a greater theoretical engagement from students and concludes the introduction to performance analysis techniques.

How do you use your body in the analysis of performances?
How do you analyse performances from the point of view of identity politics?
How do you choose a theoretical perspective when analysing performances?

Through a viewing, writing and reading trajectory, students are stimulated to engage with the (historical and contemporary) material themselves in a critical, conscious way. Through practical exercises, students have to try out different analysis techniques on different types of performances.
