Short description

The students will study conscious and unconscious 'surreal' situations, images, events, compositions or constellations in their respective national culture: first of al sculpture and in situ art, but also painting, litterature, architecture, music, theatre, dance, cinema, gaming, television, press, social media, religion, politics, educational systems, history and so on.

They will each give a lecture supported by images and texts which will be made available to the other students.

They will write short texts about it.

They will present their findings in a small publication intended for the writer Vincent Van Meenen, currently writing a PHD on surrealism at the University of Antwerp.

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
The student masters an has insight in the topics and content provided by the teacher with regard to contemporary sculpture.
The student knows and understands contemporary sculpture at an advanced level.
BA5 - When developing his/her personal visual language the students starts from a searching and reflective attitude when developing one's own visual language.
The student can enrich his insights concerning contemporary sculpture with a personal point of view and relate them to his own work.
The student can enrich his knowledge and understanding of contemporary sculpture with a personal point of view and relate it to his own work.

Course content

We learn how to read aloud, regardless of our talent for it.

We learn to discuss openly and patiently with fellow students.

We learn how to read interviews with artists and artist writings in a critical way, focusing on possible, underlying misunderstandings, the specific terminology of artists and critics.

We get acquainted with the central themes of sculpture.

We learn how these central themes get a personal or specific form in the oeuvre of outstanding sculptors.

We learn the difficulty of speaking or writing about these central themes and their specific avatars.
