Course content

The course 'Performance analysis 1' focuses on classical performance analysis, namely theatre semiotics.

Attention is paid in the first place to the way in which the theatrical signs were used in the creation of the performance. The various theatrical elements (space, décor, music, light, facial expressions, gestures, text, etc.) are examined as sign systems.

How is meaning constructed through theatrical signs in a performance?
How can students analyse them and (above all) deploy or use them themselves to create meaning?

Through a viewing, writing and reading trajectory, students are stimulated to engage with the (historical and contemporary) material themselves in a critical, conscious way. Through practical exercises, students have to try out different analysis techniques on different types of performances.
