Learning outcomes (list)

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
"The student has gained insight into the dramatic structures of theater performances and can develop a deeper analysis of characters, action, costumes, decor, lighting, grime, etc. "
BA4 - The student develops and sharpens his/her critical and investigative attitude towards designs and/or realizations that arise from visual experiments and research, emotion and intuition.
The student is able to critically assess a theater performance.

Course content

The course 'Performance analysis 2' focuses on other performing arts besides theatre, including dance (classical ballet, modern dance, postmodern dance, contemporary dance), musical theatre (opera, operetta, musical), circus and Performance Art.

Each performing art is introduced through a definition, its main characteristics, a brief history, and an explanation of some of its main historical and contemporary creators.

Afterwards, we zoom in on genre-specific analysis techniques for each performing art, after which these techniques will be applied in workshops based on case studies.

What are important differences and similarities between different performance analysis techniques and theatre (analysis)?
How do the different theatrical signs interact in these performing arts?
How do you analyse music, choreography, Body Art, etc.?

Through a viewing, writing and reading trajectory, students are stimulated to engage with the (historical and contemporary) material themselves in a critical, conscious way. Through practical exercises, students have to try out different analysis techniques on different types of performances.

Study material (text): Mandatory

The compulsory study material for ‘Performance analysis 2’ will be:

  • Lesson presentations (uploaded on Digitap by the teacher)
  • Lesson notes (to be made by the student during class)
  • Theoretical and artistic texts (uploaded on Digitap by the teacher)

In addition, the students have to see some film fragments and performances. Practical arrangements for this will be made in class.

Evaluation (text)

Several assignments are part of this course, including a test assignment, a presentation assignment and a creative assignment. Performance analysis is central to all assignments.
