Course content

The course 'Concept dramaturgy 2' constitutes a further in-depth study of dramaturgy. Dramaturgy is the science/study/art/technique of the composition and production of performances.

Introductory lectures teach alternative dramaturgy techniques, including performative dramaturgy. In the form of physical workshops, students learn how to develop a dramaturgical concept from the rehearsal floor.

This course is part of a collaboration between several Atelier courses, including Costume Design, Scenography and 3D Costume Sculpting. A major Atelier assignment requires students to develop a dramaturgical concept and scene based on a theatre text.

Study material (text): Mandatory

The compulsory study material for 'Concept dramaturgy 2’ will be:

  • Lesson presentations (placed on Digitap by the teacher)
  • Lesson notes (to be made by the student during class)
  • Theoretical and artistic texts (placed on Digitap by the teacher)

In addition, the students might have to see some film fragments and/or performances. Practical arrangements for this will be made in class.

Evaluation (text)

The evaluation of the course ‘Concept Dramaturgy’ consists of five parts (that are all intertwined):

  • Analysis of the text (permanent evaluation and individual tasks)
  • Development of a dramaturgical concept for the staging of the text (individual assignment, permanent evaluation and end presentation/jury)
  • Design of one scene within your dramaturgical concept (individual assignment, end presentation/jury)
  • Presentation of your dramaturgical concept and scene (individual assignment, end presentation/jury)
  • Attendance and engagement in the classes (permanent evaluation)

Permanent ongoing evaluation and presentations during the academic year:

  • Semester 1: initial indicating jury after completion of the first semester
  • Semester 2: final jury after conclusion of the second semester
