Learning outcomes (list)

MA4 - The student sets up and conducts independent research in function of the development of his/her artistic praxis.
The student can situate a self-chosen institution, organization or collective from this period in a broader context and analyze and interpret it in a personal way.
MA6 - The student is able to take and defend a critical position with regard to relevant social, cultural, artistic and international developments.

Course content

In this course we will investigate the rise and development of alternative and avant-garde art practices in Antwerp, from 1900 to the present, by showing and discussing documents and publications.

The focus of this 'urban archeaology' is on collective initiatives such as movements, magazines, artists' initiatives, galleries, etc.

The student is invited to put up a small research on such an initiative, summarize the results in an essay and discuss this during the oral exam.

The student will put up a small research project on an Antwerp-based initiative and disclose the results in an essay, to be presented during the oral exam.
