Learning outcomes (list)

1.1 The student masters the representative repertoire for his or her discipline.
The student analyses three arias and recitatives from the baroque, classical, early- and high-Romantic repertoire.
1.4 The student is musically creative.
The student completes harmony exercises with understanding of melodic line, progression techniques, modulation from the 2nd degree, cadences and choice and functionality of chords.
2.1 The student masters the musical parameters and structures.
The student completes harmony exercises with understanding of melodic line, progression techniques, modulation from the 2nd degree, cadences and choice and functionality of chords.
The student acquires knowledge and understanding of chordal harmony (in inversions) and dominant chords and can apply this knowledge when composing.
2.3 The student reads, analyses, writes and interprets music.
The student can define more complex harmonic structures.
The student can identify more complex harmonic structures in repertoire.
The student can identify more complex form structures in repertoire.
The student can define more complex form structures.
The student can formulate his or her own vision of a score in terms of its performance, using complex form and harmonic relationships.
The student can independently analyse a score.

Course content

Read the vademecum.
Vocal students take an integrated course unit in which Analysis and Music Writing are offered together. Students analyze repertoire from the entire history of music, but always with a focus on vocal music (song, madrigal, oratorio and opera).
Singing students who have mastered the material of Analysis/Musical Writing minor 2 may, after consultation with and approval by the Department Chair of Singing and the relevant teacher, switch at the beginning of the school year to Analysis minor 2 combined with Musical Writing minor 2.
