Learning outcomes (text)

The teaching of technique is aimed at developing a complete mastery of the voice whereby the student is capable of musical expression, interpretation and improvisation in terms of (jazz) music practice and has a knowledge of the basic repertoire. 

M1: the further development of technical capacities and skills in terms of musicality, improvisation techniques and the development of personal style. The student must be able to study independently.

Learning outcomes (list)

1.4 The student makes music in an artistic project in a creative manner.
The student is able to improvise on non-conventional, contemporary compositions.
The student personalises the use of scat syllables.
2.2 The student builds up expertise through organisation and independent study.
The student demonstrates independence in the building up of expertise.
2.3 The student can process musical structures through analysis and interpretation.
The student can sing an advanced score and solo on it at sight.
The student acquires understanding of complex musical structures by transcribing and analysing instrumental and vocal solos.
2.4 The student has acquired the correct playing techniques and posture.
The student can perform pieces with unusual time signatures and polyrhythms with good timing.
The student can sing bass notes and guide tone lines over non-conventional, contemporary compositions.
The student can perform complex technical studies.
The student can sing patterns over non-conventional, contemporary compositions.
The student can perform and implement scales and arpeggios (altered scales, octotonic, whole-tone scales, etc)

Course content

In all years:

Transcription of one vocal and one instrumental solo (this belongs, technically, to the main subject lesson but it will be tested during the Vocal studies technique exam)
Singing of guide tone lines, bass notes, patterns and improvisation over specifically chosen pieces from the repertoire list
Working on time feel, rhythm and the application of melodic material

M1: altered, octatonic and whole tone scales. Depending on the student, applying these to progressions, exercises and pieces. Upper tone structures, modern and newer progressions etc

Evaluation (text)

Assessment format: The technical exam is administered on an individual basis and may consist of the following elements:

* Scales and arpeggios
* A technical study
* One work by Bach
* Four transcriptions
* A theme with transposition
* Sight-reading

The student will pass if he/she has mastered the various technical components and is able to use these technical skills when performing. The ratio of technique to sight-reading is 70:30. If the student gets 9 (out of a possible 20) or less for one of these components, the lowest mark will count as the final total for this course unit. The student must achieve 50% of the total number of points in order to pass.
