Short description

How to embody theory? This question is relevant to any artistic practice. Since the rise of conceptual dance in the sixties and the introduction of the concept of ‘expanded choreography’ in the nineties, the relation between theory and practice happens within a sharp and continuous dialogue. Today, we build on the legacy of these periods in art creation, while at the same time, the boundaries between those fields of knowledge are increasingly becoming fluid. How to embody theory? Course content

Embodied Theory is a seminar-style course focused on the alliance between physical creative practice and theoretical research. In this course, we will inspect how the structure of reason can be built through the details of our embodiment and how we can practically integrate, cooperate, and advance with and from theoretical texts in our creative research. We will discuss how and when knowledge can be applied contextually in the studio via several tools ranging from neuroscience and art history to philosophy. Students will be guided through developing a short form based on a theoretical text linked to their research question. This short form will in turn conclude in a written proposal encapsulating a system of references born from the crossover of the text and studio works.
Embodied Theory seeks to empower students through critical, dynamic investigation of academic knowledge and continuing methods of dance research.
