Course content

The course 'History of the performing arts' describes the evolution of the phenomenon 'performance'.

This class presents a detailed overview of European theatre history, alongside African, Asian and American theatre history. Besides theatre, the history of other performing arts is discussed as well, including dance, opera, Performance Art, rituals, vaudeville and other forms of spectacle culture, situated in their (broader) social context.

This course critically examines (Western) historiography and canonization, and actively reflects on concepts such as imperialism, colonization, migration, appropriation, authorship, modernity and industrialization.

By means of a viewing, writing and reading trajectory the students are engaged to analyze the (historical and contemporary) material in a critical and conscious way.

The complete course 'History of the performing arts' is given over two course years. ‘History of the performing arts 1' deals with the origins of theatre up to and including the sixteenth century. 'History of the performing arts 2' deals with the seventeenth century up to and including contemporary theatre.
