Short description

For this class, every participating student is invited to present his or her own work (or a relevant aspect thereof) and to discuss it with the colleagues. Our main focus goes to the evolution of this work and how this might have been influenced by technical mastery, the choice of materials and techniques, accidents, limitations, experiences, insights, events, beliefs, encounters with artworks or people, unconscious patterns and so on. Whenever possible and or necessary the discussions will be broadened and put in a larger context by the teacher. The students will be evaluated on the basis of their own presentation and on their weekly contributions to the discussions.
Attendance to each class is compulsory. This is an optional course. Students that cannot attend it, cannot enlist.

Educational organisation (text)

The students will learn about the evolution of the work of some contemporary visual artists. They will also be invited to speak about the evolution of their own work and to relate this to general insights discussed in class. They can do this in their studio. If possible, two young artists will be invited to speak about their work.

Prerequisite competencies (text)

No specific requirements.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA5 - When developing his/her personal visual language the students starts from a searching and reflective attitude when developing one's own visual language.
The student understands that the oeuvre of an artist often does not come about as a result of a conceptual strategy, but as a result of a series of successive, ad hoc decisions that arise from each other and are related to each other by the materials and techniques used and by the personality (current environment, social origin, upbringing, family situation, age, education, knowledge, experience, skill) of the artist.
The student can discuss and enrich dozens of examples with a personal approach and can apply this insight to his own situation.
