Course content

The course offers an exploration of artistic developments in the 19th century. Artworks are placed within their cultural and historical context, with attention to movements such as Academicism, Romanticism, Realism, and Symbolism. Using examples, various aspects are highlighted for each style, including techniques, iconography, creation process, and materials. Additionally, these historical art movements are connected to more recent developments and contemporary art. The course also adopts a transhistorical and transcultural perspective, which can allow for the discussion of one or more non-Western art forms alongside Western artistic developments.
