Learning outcomes (list)

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
The student has a thorough knowledge of the Western artistic developments of the 19th century.
The student can situate, explain and interpret these developments, and is aware of the artistic canon regarding the visual arts and the architecture of this period.

Course content

In Art History: The nineteenth century we offer a thorough art historical overview of the canonical artistic developments in Western Europe between 1800 and 1900.

A central theme will be the relation between tradition and modernism. De rise of the avant-garde in the arts will be demonstrated throughout ten chapters, using concrete examples from architecture, applied arts, sculpture, painting and graphic art. The following currents will be discussed: Neo-Classicism, Romanticism, Historicism, Academism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau. The most important artists and their realisations will be discussed in class.

Each class starts by looking at and interpreting the present day art situation.
