(previously registered for Art and cultural history before 1500 AND previously registered for Art and cultural history 1500-1800) OR previously registered for Art History and Contemporary Art 1.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
"The student has a thorough knowledge of the western artistic developments of the first half of the 20th century. "
The student is able to explain and explain these developments and is aware of the artistic canon regarding the visual arts and the architecture of this period.

Course content

The course explores the avant-garde movements between 1900 and 1945, in particular cubism, futurism, expressionism, surrealism, suprematism and dadaism. Works of art are placed in a cultural-historical context with attention to the interaction between art and society. Examples are used to highlight aspects such as techniques, iconography, the creative process and materials for each movement. In addition, the historical art movements are linked to more recent developments and contemporary art. The course also takes a transhistorical and transcultural approach, which means that in addition to Western art, one or more non-Western art movements can also be discussed.
