Course content

In this course, the development of the film costume in the 20th century is discussed. In concrete terms, it concerns the period 1890-1960 in the European Union and the United States, ie the emergence of cinema up to and including the end of the heyday of the Hollywood industry. These historical film genres are compared to later New Wave variants and contemporary cinema. The focus is on genre and style iconography with regard to setting and costume. On the basis of the treated films, the students get an overview of the development of the costume throughout the 20th century, how coupe elements changed and how we can interpret this within its time and place. In addition, insight is given into the development of genre and style over the years, how these developments relate to social developments at that time and how we can now look at such genre films from a contemporary perspective. In preparation for each lecture, students are expected to watch a number of compulsory films.
