Prerequisite competencies (text)

The piano level is checked at the start of the lessons.

Preferably, the student has finished a piano preparatory training (Flemisch Parttime Art Education DKO 2nd grade) with notions of polyphonic, classical, romantic and/or 20th century literature, briefly approached from appropriate techniques.

If not, the student will at least have sufficient musical baggage from a training with another instrument, from which musical-historical and motoric notions of style were acquired.

A choral education as background is recommended.

Students who do not have the required starting competencies and are nevertheless admitted to B1 are recommended to enrol for piano in the DKO.

The student has refined his or her techniques to make an efficient study plan and to follow it.
2.3 The student reads, analyses, writes and interprets music.
The student explores techniques (tempo, timing, intonation, timbre, development of motifs, phrasing, form, listenting skills etc) to master the interpretation of existing piano repertoire.
The student can make basic simplifications of accompaniments by reducing the basic harmonic material.
The student can harmonise melodic lines.

- acquire relevant technical and musical independence at the keyboard in function of supporting vocal practice.
- learning to play simple accompaniments correctly & to re-arrange/simplify difficult accompaniments so that they become playable.
- practical knowledge of chords, accompaniment patterns, etc. - being able to perform these fluently and correctly.
- being able to compose your own accompaniment using the above building blocks.
- acquire technical independence using pieces from the traditional piano repertoire or jazz piano practice.

For the study of the traditional 'classical' piano repertoire one should choose 'piano secondary subject'.
