Short description

In the European Union social security belongs to the competence of the Member States. This means that there are as many different social security systems as Member States. The task of the European Union is mainly to coordinate these systems in the light of the free movement of persons (hard law). Moreover the EU tries to reach common objectives for social protection and social inclusion with the open method of coordination (OMC) (soft law).
