Learning outcomes (list)

OLR AF 7.2 - The bachelor BM/AF can communicate professionally, in spoken and written English, using the appropriate vocabulary in a professional context.
You manage verbally with relative ease in everyday professional situations.
You participate in a discussion or meeting within a familiar business context and help keep the conversation going.
You will give a well-prepared presentation on industry-related topics and know how to build an appropriate clearly understandable structure into this.
You have oral and written communication skills, both social and professional.
You produce a coherent text or write a clear report on sector-related topics that are familiar.
You correctly apply the grammar covered (reports, linking words, relative clauses, etc.).
You build on the knowledge from documents, articles, reports and emails from your field to get started.

Course content

  • Application of previously acquired knowledge of grammar and sentence structure through representative assignments (see below).
  • Application and expansion of previously acquired general and course-specific vocabulary on the basis of reading, analyzing, summarizing, and presenting English-language articles.
  • Further development of the student's speaking, writing, and reading skills through representative assignments (see below).
  • Representative assignments (individual and/or group)
  •   look up and process information on an unfamiliar topic and present it to colleagues
  • give an educational or explanatory presentation to colleagues
  • summarize a text
  • develop a vocabulary list
  • organize and conduct a meeting
  • Independent work:
  • Components of group work (division of labor with autonomy)
    Group work:
  • Collaboration with other students in randomly formed groups
  • Communication is exclusively in English in all circumstances and at all times, in order to simulate as realistic a work situation as possible in which e.g. a supervising colleague does not have a command of Dutch.

    At the end of this course unit you reach CEFR level B1+.
