Course content

In the course Fashion Design 1, you will develop an initial understanding of the creative and conceptual process of fashion design, with a strong focus on personal development, technical translation, and critical reflection.

The academic year is structured around three main design assignments: the skirt, the dress, and the experimental coat. For each of these projects, you will go through a complete 2D design process, which includes:

  • Concept development
  • Formal research
  • Colour and material exploration
  • Garment research
  • Design development
  • Translation into concrete sketches

From each project, one design is selected by the instructor to be further developed in fabric within Coupe 1. These selected designs also serve as a starting point for further visual interpretation in Fashion Graphics 1.

In addition to the main projects, there are five smaller design assignments in which you will:

  • Create mini-collections within specific parameters;
  • Learn to work with colour, material, and texture;
  • Research costume history and translate it into design;
  • Explore and apply various design techniques.

Together, these main and supporting assignments offer a solid foundation in fashion design, encouraging experimentation, technical skill, and personal expression.

Study material (text): Mandatory

  • Personal research and study materials from various sources, visual, texts, 3D
