Short description

The student is expected to gain insights from basic pattern-design studies and basic technical studies based on skirt, the dress and the shirt.

The student has to develop further the acquired machine and pattern techniques by self-research and  guiding in order to be able to use them starting from their own 2D-design to make an innovative and artistic final 3D outcome.

The expectation is to work, using as much creativity as possible with an emphasis on experiments of 3-D shapes and to get encouraged to work with new forms and technics by self research and gained insights.



Learning outcomes (list)

BA1 - The student has the necessary artistic skills to design and/or realize a personal project within the broad spectrum of the visual arts under supervision.
The student can apply these techniques correctly and artistically
The student masters the basic practical skills.
The student is able to give a contemporary visual interpretation to an assignment within a predetermined time frame.
The student knows the different techniques (which were offered through the course or discovered by means of personal research) that offer the possibility of creating three-dimensional form.
The student has acquired pattern knowledge of skirt and dress and lis able tot translate this knowledge into a creative result.
The student has mastered the the technical skills taught in class and can apply this knowledge and skills in a critical way in personal realizations.
The student is able to realise his/her own design by analyzing and molding basic patterns of existing clothing.
The student has insight into the conversion of a 2D to a 3D image and vice versa.
The student can solve a problem about form, content and technical realization

Course content

- basic knowledge of pattern study skirt and dress
- basic knowledge of skirt and dress/shirt blouse techniques
- various exercises to develop technical skills 
- various 3D developments of the design in toiles
- working from 2D to 3D of final own design: skirt, dress, experimental piece

Study material (text): Mandatory

  • Sewing machine and ironing system, both with accessories,
  • Pattern drawing materials,
  • Studio mannequin to be purchased after consultation with the teacher
  • Calico/bale cotton
  • Fabrics/materials specific to assignments.

Evaluation (text)

Continuous assessment through presentation and review moments throughout the academic year. The student's attendance and active participation is required for this course. In case of justified absence, notify the lecturer by mail and from the third absence onwards, you must submit a valid certificate via the absence monitor in iBaMaFlex.

Semester 1: an initial formative evaluation takes place at the end of the first semester.
Semester 2: a final jury evaluation takes place at the end of the second semester.

Process and product are inseparably linked and are evaluated as a whole.
The final assessment of both process and product is determined 100% during the final jury at the end of semester 2.
