Course content

The focus in Fashion Design 3 is on learning how to conduct in-depth research.

You will immerse yourself in the socio-cultural background of a specific country or people and learn how to represent your insights in a graphic design. Based on a thorough analysis of patterns, materials, colours and techniques, you will create an accurate replica of a world costume. You will then use digital image editing to design a graphic costume book. This costume will be presented during the end-of-year show, where you will independently walk through the entire process. For those who wish, you can collaborate with a fellow student from the same class group (3BA) to strengthen your collaboration skills.

You will then conduct research into a current art movement or artist and use this as a basis for developing an innovative collection concept with a personal signature. You will translate this into a coherent fashion collection, elaborated in a graphic sketchbook and 3D studies. You will study current fashion collections as references and apply your own unique choice of colours and fabrics, supported by fabric samples. Through preliminary studies and toiles, you will build up the collection into a series of complete silhouettes with innovative volumes and shapes. You will finish the collection with your own make-up, styling and accessories that reinforce the image of the collection.

After designing, you will present your collection in various phases. During the final ‘fitting’, the last show before the show, you will show the finished silhouettes to the jury. Based on this fitting, the most suitable presentation form will be chosen in consultation. This is followed by a photo shoot and the catwalk presentation with attention to music, lighting and choreography. Finally, you will develop an installation as part of the final presentation.

This public presentation will be supported by extensive documentation of your design process. You will compile a dossier including museum and archive research, personal work, sketches, fabric and colour samples, and digital image media. Recommended professional literature and multimedia may further supplement this. This documentation forms the substantive basis for your collection and makes your design choices clear to the jury.

The combination of creation, documentation and presentation reflects the versatility of the fashion designer's profession and prepares you for a professional field in which you will develop into a versatile and creative fashion professional.
