Course content

The course Contemporary Art: Neo-Avant-Gardes explores a number of developments in art in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, supplemented by an overview of recent exhibitions, events and publications relating to contemporary visual art. Movements such as Cobra, Abstract Expressionism, Situationism, Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus, Happening, Pop Art and Minimal Art are discussed. Attention is paid to both exhibition and publication history and to the most representative figures of these developments. These historical art developments are always linked to more recent art developments and current events in the art world. The course focuses on a transhistorical and transcultural way of looking at art developments between 1900 and 1945. For this reason, in addition to Western art developments, one or more non-Western art developments are also discussed.
