Short description

This course deepens artistic awareness by encouraging students to critically examine and articulate their own working process. In an open dialogue, intuitions, influences and choices are revealed and linked to broader artistic contexts. In this way, students develop a stronger understanding of the genesis of their own oeuvre and that of others.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA5 - When developing his/her personal visual language the students starts from a searching and reflective attitude when developing one's own visual language.
The student understands that the oeuvre of an artist often does not come about as a result of a conceptual strategy, but as a result of a series of successive, ad hoc decisions that arise from each other and are related to each other by the materials and techniques used and by the personality (current environment, social origin, upbringing, family situation, age, education, knowledge, experience, skill) of the artist.
The student can discuss and enrich dozens of examples with a personal approach and can apply this insight to his own situation.

Course content

We study how oeuvres develop and learn to talk about our own work in front of an audience.

In Genesis of an Oeuvre, you are invited to show your own work, or a relevant part of it, and discuss it with those present, focusing primarily on the development of this work and the factors that have influenced it: the choice of materials and techniques, accidents, limitations, experiences, insights, events, beliefs, encounters with works of art or people, unconscious patterns, and so on. The discussions are guided, supplemented and placed in a broader context by the lecturer. You will be assessed on the basis of your own presentation and your weekly contributions to the discussions. Attendance at all classes is compulsory. This is an elective course. If you are unable to attend, you cannot choose this course.
