Short description

Art and Cultural History 1500-1800 focuses on Western Europe during the modern era and contextualises European architecture and visual arts chronologically. It provides students with a basis for situating works of art from this period in their cultural-historical context.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
The student understands the material, formal and content characteristics of art styles of this period.
The student can use his art-historical knowledge as a frame of reference.
The student knows and understands the basic characteristics and evolution of the western art history of the modern era from the 16th towards the end of the 18th century.
The student knows and recognizes the most important movements, artists and artworks of the Western art history of the modern era from the 16th towards the end of the 18th century.

Course content

The course explores a number of developments in art between 1500 and 1800 and situates art movements, artists and works of art within a Western cultural-historical context. Attention is paid to developments in art such as the Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism. For each style, aspects such as techniques, iconography, the creative process and materials are discussed using examples from the visual arts.

Study material (text): Mandatory

Each class week, a PowerPoint Presentation with visuals will be made available through the digital learning platform. In addition, a syllabus is also made available via the digital learning platform.

This material should be supplemented by personal notes taken during the lectures.
