Short description

Art and cultural history 19th century examines the major transformations in artistic production and experience in the 19th century, with an emphasis on the emergence of modernism.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
The student has a thorough knowledge of the Western artistic developments of the 19th century.
The student can situate, explain and interpret these developments, and is aware of the artistic canon regarding the visual arts and the architecture of this period.

Course content

The course explores a number of art developments in the 19th century, placing art movements, artists and works of art within a chronologically structured, Western cultural-historical context. Attention is given to art developments such as academism, romanticism, realism and symbolism, among others. For each style, aspects such as techniques, iconography, creation process and materials are covered through examples.

Study material (text): Mandatory

Each class week, a PowerPoint Presentation with visuals will be made available through the digital learning platform. A syllabus will also be made available through this platform. This material should be supplemented by personal notes taken during the lectures.

Written exam, with a combination of multiple choice questions and open questions. This for both the first and the second exam period.
