(previously registered for Art and cultural history before 1500 AND previously registered for Art and cultural history 1500-1800) OR previously registered for Art History and Contemporary Art 1.

Learning outcomes (list)

BA3 - The student knows about and understands the social, cultural, artistic, historical and international context of the visual arts and artistic praxis, and continues to develop this knowledge and understanding.
"The student has a thorough knowledge of the western artistic developments of the first half of the 20th century. "
The student is able to explain and explain these developments and is aware of the artistic canon regarding the visual arts and the architecture of this period.
"The student can use the correct art-historical terminology, and chronology regarding the visual arts and architecture from this period. "

Course content

The course explores a range of art developments between 1900-1940, placing art movements, artists and works of art within a Western, chronologically structured cultural-historical context. Attention is given to Avant-Garde movements such as Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Suprematism and Dadaism, among others. Central is the interaction between art and society. For each style, by means of examples from the visual arts, aspects such as techniques, iconography, creation process and materials are treated.

Study material (text): Mandatory

Each class week, a PowerPoint Presentation with visuals will be made available via the electronic learning platform.
This should be supplemented by personal notes taken during the lectures.

Written exam, with a combination of multiple choice questions and open questions. This for both the first and second exam period.
