Learning outcomes (list)

2.1 The student masters the musical parameters and structures.
The student further develops knowledge and insight in more complex forms and structures with a focus on different genres and techniques from the Romantic and early 20th century period.
4.1 The student has knowledge of the broader cultural and (musical) historical context.
The student can implement obtained insight in musical (historical) context and combine it with skills and knowledge obtained in the Analysis course, with a special focus on Romantic and early 20th century music.
4.2 The student possesses the correct tools to carry out research.
The student marries up analytical skills with the course content and skills within the subject Research, and vice versa.
4.3 The student reflects critically on him- or herself and his surroundings.
The student applies the acquired skills and knowledge in his or her daily performance and study.

Course content

Crucial to the course is the search for deeper connections and a correct understanding of the notated music; in this way, tools are provided that can lead to meaningful interpretation and appreciation of a score.

- Analysis of music from the Romantic era and early 20th century
- In-depth discussion of striking compositions from Western music literature
- All instrumentations, especially orchestral works
- Discussion of analytical methods
- Introductory study of 20th and 21st century music
- Developing research skills
