Short description

It is sometimes said that Europe is a far-from-your-bed show. Although everyone comes into daily contact with matters that Europe regulates, we often do not know what this complex mechanism does and how exactly it works.

Of course, this is not the case for Law Practice students; you have already been introduced to European law. Still, the role of Europe may not be clear in all areas. That is exactly what this course aims to change. After attending this course, students will be closer to the work of the European Commission, Parliament and Council and think concretely about their role and the importance of the European project.

We cover various topics in social security, with the aim of gaining a broad knowledge of social policy, politics and the workings of the European Union. To give you an idea: in the European Union, social security is the competence of the member states. As such, there are currently as many social security systems as there are Member States. The task of the European Union is mainly to regulate the coordination of these systems with a view to the free movement of persons (hard law). Moreover, it seeks to achieve common objectives for social protection and social inclusion through the open method of coordination (OMC) (soft law).

So, if you are interested in welfare, social cohesion and the functioning of the European Union, this course is really for you.
