Studenten kunnen hun perspectief verbreden door zich te verdiepen in een andere discipline of onderwijscontext. Via een keuzevak uit het aanbod van de Academie, het Koninklijk Conservatorium of de Universiteit Antwerpen ontwikkelen studenten een interdisciplinaire houding en vergroten ze hun inhoudelijke en artistieke flexibiliteit. Het stimuleert zelfstandigheid, verbreding van kennis en verbinding tussen uiteenlopende kennisvelden.

Verlaat even het vertrouwde pad. Laat je uitdagen. Ontdek hoe waardevol het is om je kunstenaarsblik te scherpen in een academische context aan de universiteit. Sta je open voor nieuwe perspectieven op je artistieke praktijk? In je masterjaar krijg je de kans om een academisch keuzevak aan de universiteit te volgen. Je volgt les in een omgeving waar je samenwerkt met studenten uit andere disciplines. Geen kunstenaars dus, maar studenten met een andere taal, andere vragen, een andere manier van kijken. Dat kan confronterend zijn, maar vooral ook verfrissend en inspirerend. Het vak dat je kiest sluit aan bij jouw interessegebied, maar is tegelijk theoretisch van aard, academisch in opzet en vraagt inzet: aanwezigheid, nieuwsgierigheid en de bereidheid om je echt vast te bijten in complexe materie. Sommige vakken worden afgerond met een paper, andere met een klassiek kennisexamen – ook dat is deel van de uitdaging. Wat je ervoor terugkrijgt? Nieuwe denkmodellen, kritische inzichten, onverwachte connecties – en misschien wel een totaal nieuwe manier om naar je eigen werk te kijken.

1. DIGITAL MEDIA FUTURES (Master Communication Sciences): How digital media shape our world – and how you can help shape theirs. In this course, you critically explore the promises and problems of digital media and emerging technologies. While once seen as tools for social progress, platforms like Meta and Amazon now raise concerns about monopoly power, democracy, privacy, surveillance, disinformation, and environmental impact. You gain theoretical and conceptual tools to engage with these challenges, exploring frameworks on ethics, social justice, and media policy. Topics include platformisation, algorithmic politics, AI ethics, data governance, and the ecological footprint of digital infrastructures—encouraging you to think about how digital futures can be actively shaped. (Check Brochure Keuzevakken)

2. MEDIA AND DEMOCRATIC DEBATE (Master Communication Sciences): How can you critically assess media representations of social issues?
In this course, you explore how media shape public debate and how to assess whether they truly support democratic dialogue. Drawing from political philosophy and media sociology, you engage with concepts like democracy, pluralism, objectivity, ideology, and (de)politicization. You apply these ideas to case studies on topics such as climate change, new technologies, social movements, and austerity, analysing how both mainstream and alternative media represent them. A research guide helps you evaluate these debates, and the course concludes with a guest lecture and open discussion with a journalist or international expert. (Check Brochure Keuzevakken)

3. THE DOCUMENTARY IMAGE (Master Film Studies & Visual Culture): Explore the evolving world of documentary images
In this course, you explore the evolution of documentary images—from traditional practices to contemporary, experimental, and interactive forms like VR. After a brief reflection on documentation in photography and film, the focus shifts to documentary cinema. You examine both classic and new formats, gaining insight into key debates and learning to distinguish between genres and modes—seeing documentary as evidence, art, advocacy, information, or entertainment. Through a mix of lectures, screenings, and discussions, you actively engage with the documentary as a dynamic and multifaceted medium. 4. VISUAL AESTHETIC AND ANALYSIS (Master Filmstudies & Visuele Cultuur): Deze cursus bestaat uit twee delen. In het eerste deel (VISUELE CULTUUR) maak je kennis met de betekenis van visuele esthetiek vanuit een historisch en cultureel perspectief. Je leert kritisch omgaan met begrippen zoals esthetiek, visuele cultuur, beeld, representatie en visie, en je ontdekt welke sociale, culturele en politieke implicaties deze termen met zich meebrengen. Dit vormt de context voor het tweede deel van de cursus (BEELD- EN FILMANALYSE), waarin je een basisintroductie krijgt tot belangrijke concepten en benaderingen van filmanalyse.
