Course content

Extra Academy is a small-scale, structural platform “in development”, born out of a spontaneous alliance between Stadsform, the Royal Conservatoire, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Sint-Lucas Antwerp. In close collaboration with a network of guests and students, it offers programmes and tools that both complement and disrupt classical academic models and reflexes.

The open evening programme – featuring lectures, performances, workshops, exhibitions and film screenings – deliberately takes place outside the walls of the academy and explores alternative forms of knowledge production, research and artistic practice on a monthly basis. Students and the public are challenged to reflect on underexposed artistic visions and practices that are rarely addressed in the media or traditional art education.

Extra Academy aspires to a richer and more complex understanding of what contemporary artistic practice can be, always in dialogue with art-historical, socio-political, philosophical and economic perspectives. It investigates gaps, coincidences and unexpected solutions, and searches for the moment when ideas take shape and become tangible. Extra Academy does not believe in theory as a mere allegory of practice, but as an active part of it. It listens, observes, asks questions and marvels – while offering space and time for the plasticity of ideas to manifest themselves.
