Short description

In Research: Dance and Society, students will reflect upon their research question in a critical perspective, positioning their artistic practice into a wider artistic, political, cultural and social context.

Learning outcomes (list)

3. Reflects and investigates on questions and experiential knowledge in order to deepen their artistic practice.
Actively traces and processes a range of sources and methodologies related to current dance research
Shows basic knowledge of current discussions in social, political, cultural and economical context
9. Invests, through resonating within the socio-political and economic climate, in the reciprocal relationship between their own artistic practice and society.
Is acquainted with different notions of dance research and acknowledges how it functions in a wider artistic, political, economic and/or social context
Analyses, elaborates and relate own artistic research to relevant topics such as postcolonialism, necropolotics, cultural studies and queer studies
(Re)defines, defends and if necessary challenge their role as an artist in society

Course content

In the course Research: Dance and Society, students are encouraged to reflect upon their research question and their artistic practice in relation to society. By discussing and analyzing texts and concepts such as for example; post-colonialism, new materialism and queer studies, students are given tools to integrate these different perspectives into their own practice. Through this course, students develop critical skills essential for developing their embodied artistic research. The course is guided by teaching artists who provide both a theoretical and a practical perspective on the relationship between Dance and Society. By sharing concepts and notions, this course unit provides students with tools to place their practice in a broader artistic, political, economic, and social context.
