Short description

Artist Talks offers students the opportunity to explore current developments in the contemporary arts field through lectures organised by various art institutions. Active participation and critical reflection help to establish a connection between external artistic practices and the students' own artistic development. The course encourages in-depth exploration, context awareness and the establishment of relevant connections within and outside the students' own discipline.

Learning outcomes (list)

MA1 - The student has an artistic and autonomous attitude and continues to develop his/herown art practice.
De student has an artistic and autonomous attitude to develop his (own) artistic practice.
The student starts in his artistic research from a personal questioning and point of view, both in the field of thematics and visual language, as in the field of specific plastic processing.
The student has insight into the historical and current visual/audiovisual arts, is able to follow and interpret the evolutions within the artistic field, and position himself within an artistic and intellectual framework.
MA2 - The student takes final responsibility when designing and/or realizing a personal artistic project.
The student chooses consciously from acquired artistic insights and skills, and applies them in the autonomous research project; is self-critical and can select within his work.
MA3 - The student understands the essence of his/her personal artistic development and communicates in a clear and thoughtful way to colleagues and an external audience.
The student can translate the development of his creative process into language.
The student can formulate a reflective text in the context of his own artistic trajectory.
MA4 - The student sets up and conducts independent research in function of the development of his/her artistic praxis.
The student uses his / her research material in a critical way.
The student shows creativity and originality in the interpretation of the material and the use of arguments.

Course content

You attend a minimum of 5 artist talks, to be freely chosen from the offerings of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (Guess who's coming to dinner), the M_HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp), the KMSKA (Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp), the MoMu (Fashion Museum Antwerp), the FOMU (Fotomuseum Antwerpen) or the Middelheim Museum. These lectures will provide the material on which you will reflect (self-)critically on your own artistic practice.

Study material (text): Mandatory

During the artist talks you have chosen, you will take notes that will serve as the basis for your summaries and reflections. You will start from the insights and knowledge you gain during these lectures and connect them to your own artistic practice.

Evaluation (text)

The review consists of 2 parts:

1. 5 summaries of the artist talks attended. Each summary is approximately 500 words and includes 1 image, made by the student(s), showing that the student actually attended this talk. These 5 summaries together count for 40% of the final evaluation.

2. A short paper in which the student, using the insights and knowledge acquired through the lectures, reflects on his/her own artistic practice. This reflection paper counts approximately 1000 words. The reflection paper weighs 60% in the final evaluation.
